THE PRINCIPIA DIFFERENCE

Why Choose Principia Education?

Principia Education was built around a simple idea: families shouldn't have to start over every time their student’s needs change. Our team brings academic tutoring, test preparation, and admissions consulting together within one educational organization, pairing highly personalized, one-on-one support with the expertise, resources, and continuity of a full team. That means we can get to know students deeply and support them as they grow: from elementary school academics to high school test prep to the college application process, we often work with the same families for many years. Based in McLean, Virginia, we partner with students throughout Northern Virginia in person and with families nationwide online.

Support That Grows With Your Student

We built Principia to be a place families could turn to not just for one class, one test, or one application, but throughout their students' educational journeys.

A student might first come to us for reading and writing support in fifth grade, return for TJ or private school admissions in eighth grade, work with us throughout high school for AP classes and SAT or ACT prep, and eventually sit down with one of our college consultants to build a thoughtful application.

Because our team works together, those transitions don't have to mean starting over. We can carry forward what we've learned about a student's strengths, challenges, goals, and personality while bringing in new specialists as their needs evolve.

Some of our most meaningful relationships with families have lasted for years. To us, that's what educational support should look like.

Personalized Approach

When we say a one-on-one session, we mean it: one student, one instructor.

We take student-instructor chemistry seriously, matching students with instructors based on academic needs, learning style, personality, and goals. Our instructors shape every session around the student in front of them. They get to know how their students think, where they get stuck, what motivates them, and what kind of encouragement actually works.

That relationship continues outside the session, too. We track progress over time, communicate with families after sessions, and adjust our approach as students' needs change.

The right instructor should be more than someone who knows the material. They should be someone a student trusts.

Exceptional Instructors & Consultants

We are exceptionally selective about who joins our team. Our instructors are experienced educators chosen not only for their subject expertise, but for their ability to communicate, connect, and mentor. Our college consultants bring deep knowledge of the admissions process, exceptional writing and strategic skills, and years of experience helping students find and tell the stories that make them distinctive.

Everyone who works directly with students undergoes a rigorous interview and training process, including mock teaching and shadowing for each subject they teach. Once on the team, our instructors and consultants benefit from Principia's curriculum, ongoing training, and collective experience. But credentials alone aren't enough. We look for people we would trust with our own children: thoughtful, curious, empathetic educators who genuinely care about the students they serve.

Expert Guidance in Northern Virginia—and Around the World

Principia Education is based in McLean, Virginia. Northern Virginia has been our home from the beginning, and our team knows the academic environment our students are navigating.

Over the years, we’ve worked with thousands of students from schools throughout Fairfax County, Arlington, Falls Church, and the greater Washington, DC area. To list a few, we've worked extensively with students from Langley, McLean, Marshall, Madison, Oakton, Yorktown, Washington-Liberty, and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, as well as students from many of the area's independent schools, including Potomac, Madeira, Flint Hill, Holton Arms, Bullis, and Sidwell Friends.

That familiarity matters. We understand local course sequences and curricula, the demands of AP and advanced classes, TJHSST and private school admissions, and the highly competitive college admissions landscape for many Northern Virginia students. That context allows us to give students and families advice specific to the world they're actually navigating, not a generic playbook.

Today, our reach extends well beyond Northern Virginia. Through online tutoring and consulting, we work with students across the country and abroad, with particularly strong communities of Principia families in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City. Wherever our students are located, we bring the same highly personalized, relationship-driven approach that has defined Principia from the beginning.

Results That Matter

Relationships and mentorship are at the heart of our work, but ultimately, families come to us because they want to see students grow.

We're proud of our numbers. But we're just as proud of the student who no longer dreads math class, the teenager who discovers that she's a stronger critical thinker than she thought, or the senior who leaves the college process understanding himself a little better than when he entered it.

For us, the best outcomes are both measurable and personal.

Trusted by Students & Families

For years, Principia grew almost entirely through word of mouth: one family telling another family about an instructor, consultant, or experience that made a difference.

That remains one of the greatest compliments we can receive.

Today, families continue to choose Principia for the same reasons they always have: experienced educators, thoughtful matching, individual attention, consistent communication, and a team that genuinely cares about the students we serve.

  • I cannot recommend Principia highly enough. I have used their services for several classes: math, English, TJ prep, SAT prep and college applications. The instructors are very organized and tailor the material to the student's needs. They go above and beyond to meet your needs.

  • I have been working with Principia for over 2 years, and I can confidently say that this is the most beneficial and straightforward system to tutoring that I have seen. Both the 1-on-1 and small group SAT tutoring have worked wonders, and I am very proud of the accomplishments I have achieved during and following my time with Principia.
