Tutoring

From elementary reading to multivariable calculus, we offer expertise across every academic subject, including school support, enrichment programs, and AP exam support. But what sets us apart isn’t just the range. It’s the relationship.

At Principia, tutoring isn’t transactional. Each student is paired with a dedicated instructor who doesn’t just know the material — they get to know your student: how they think, where they get stuck, what excites them, and what kind of encouragement actually lands.

Our sessions (in-person or online) are tailored, thoughtful, and built around the long game — helping students develop clarity, confidence, and curiosity in the classroom and beyond. No scripts. No generic AI feedback. Just real teaching, with real people, who really care.

How It Works

We’ll talk through your student’s learning style, goals, and where they could use a little extra support. Book a time here.

1. Book a Consultation

We’ll handpick an instructor from our team for weekly sessions — someone who’s not just smart, but a great fit given your student’s needs.

2. Instructor Match

Our office will be in touch to send over our parent agreement and instructions on how to complete your account setup—we use the Teachworks platform for scheduling and billing.

3. Account Setup

We’re big on communication. After each session, you’ll get a summary of what was covered and any homework assigned. Students and parents are always welcome to share what’s working (or what’s not). We listen — and we adjust.

4. Ongoing Feedback

Curious about packages?

Our tutoring packages are available in 20, 40, and 80 hours, with savings of 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. Whether you're looking for academic support, AP tutoring, or test prep, we've got options to fit your goals.

Pricing

An hour of tutoring is 55 minutes in duration. The additional 5 minutes of each hour is used by tutors to compile notes from the session. Our tutors’ rates are determined by their respective levels of expertise and experience.

For remote tutoring, Principia utilizes the Pencil Spaces platform for a streamlined whiteboard and video learning experience. All of our policies and level of instruction are the same regardless of the teaching format. Please see here for information on our package discounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I see my student's scheduled sessions?

Once your student has been onboarded, log in to your Teachworks account here anytime to view the calendar.

Why do you pay instructors for canceled sessions?

Our instructors spend significant time throughout the week prepping for their sessions, often far in advance of our 48-hour cancellation policy. Uncompensated last-minute cancellations are one of the top reasons for instructor turnover; our policy is designed to retain the best instructors over the long term to provide a consistent learning experience for our students, often over many years.

Can I meet with my student's instructor outside of sessions?

For parent-teacher consultations, we recommend utilizing the first or last 15 minutes of the session. Please reach out 48 hours in advance so your instructor can plan their session accordingly. For more in-depth instructor meetings, please reach out via email to schedule—these meetings will be billed in 15-minute increments at the instructor's current hourly rate.

What is your cancellation policy?

Principia understands that our clients have busy schedules. To that end, we're happy to cancel or reschedule sessions and appointments with at least 48-hour notice. The best way to reach out is via email — please contact your instructor and our office so we can adjust schedules and calendars accordingly.

In cases of inclement weather and emergencies, we may waive this policy. Principia's client coordinators will make a determination on fee waivers for late cancellations due to emergencies. Please note that all no-shows and cancellations made on short notice will be charged the full amount of the scheduled time billed at the instructor's hourly rate.

Our travel plans changed, and my student can no longer make a scheduled session. How can I cancel?

No problem — you can cancel directly online through the Teachworks platform with no charge, as long as it’s outside our 48-hour cancellation window.

Do you have any more affordable options than private 1:1 tutoring?

Yes! We offer small group SAT and TJ group classes in addition to our 1:1 options. For more information on these courses, you can set up a time for a 20-minute consultation or sign up directly on our SAT and TJ pages.
