Jun-Ho

Four-Year Package | Princeton

Jun-ho joined us in the spring of 8th grade after receiving rejections from every private school on his list. During our first meeting he repeated his father’s stinging words—“We didn’t come to America for you to fail”—and confessed that, while his grades were solid, his interests were scattered across politics, business, engineering, and even the possibility of a collegiate-soccer path.

Ayla

Three-Year Package | Cornell

Ayla and her family came to us in late 9th grade. She was a strong student at The Madeira School, a local all-girls private school, but otherwise had little in terms of her profile.

7th-8th Grade

For families coming to us in 7th and 8th grade, we cover the following in our packages:

  • Choosing a high school isn’t just about prestige — it’s about fit, foundation, and future outcomes. For families who are considering boarding/private/magnet school options, we assist with applications and advise on the choice that sets the stage for everything that follows.

  • At this stage, it’s not about doing everything — it’s about identifying what matters. We help students refine their interests in ways that feel genuine, not manufactured. We’re not going to force anyone to start sailing or playing polo, but we do want to identify the intellectual and extracurricular areas that will help your student stand out in the admissions process.

  • We map out a clear, customized plan for testing and coursework — one that maximizes opportunity while protecting against unforced errors later on. For some colleges, it might be a mistake to take the SAT in 10th grade; for some high schools, we’ll want to take prerequisite courses over the summer to free up your school year schedule for more advanced coursework.

  • While you don’t need a self-directed project to get into an elite college, it can certainly help—if done the right way. We’ve all seen ones that feel like lip service, barely connected to the student’s overall narrative and clearly designed to fold after the student goes to college. Our goal is to help students develop authentic projects that connect to their personal stories and /or long-term goals—they’re designed to live on after they leave for college and have a lasting community impact.

Pricing

$3,520 for Principia Team
$7,040 for Founder

Includes up to 8 hours of support over the school year, with a mix of 1:1 sessions and asynchronous assistance — from essay editing and family communication to research on summer programs, narratives, and impact projects.

  • A popular college interview question is: If you had a day with no responsibilities and obligations, how would you spend your day? Consider your summer the 10-week version of that question—how are you making the most of this valuable time? Schools are going through your activity list to discern just that, and we’re here to make sure they see you’re using that time strategically and efficiently, whether that’s through competitive research programs, developing a business refurbishing electric bike batteries, or working on your graphic novel for the YoungArts Fellowship.

11th Grade

For families coming to us in 11th grade, we cover the following in our packages:

  • High school is the time to begin to specialize and hone in on intellectual and extracurricular interests in an authentic way—we’re not going to force anyone to start sailing or playing polo, but we do want to identify the intellectual and extracurricular areas that will help your student stand out in the admissions process.

  • We’ll help you navigate the ideal timing for testing as well as course selection strategy—for some colleges, it might be a mistake to take the SAT in 10th grade; for some high schools, we’ll want to take prerequisite courses over the summer tp free up your school year schedule for more advanced coursework.

12th Grade:
One School Package

For families interested in working with us on just their top-choice school, we offer the following in our One School Package:

  • By senior year, some missteps can’t be undone — but others can, and we move fast to fix them before they hurt a student’s application. We’ll identify a few smart, strategic activities to help sharpen their narrative and highlight a clear strength. We’ll also course-correct where possible: dropping or switching out of a language is a red flag, for instance, but we can still enroll in outside classes to patch those gaps.

  • While teachers and counselors mean well, their letters can sometimes end up sounding generic — not because they don’t care, but because they’re busy and don’t always have specific examples to draw from. That’s why we help our students reflect on meaningful stories and moments they can share with their recommenders. Our students won’t ever see the final letters, of course — but in our experience, when given thoughtful material, counselors and teachers are eager to use it to advocate for their students.

  • The Common App essay is just the beginning. Most top-tier colleges require supplemental essays — each one an opportunity to show genuine interest and fit. These can’t simply be copy-pasted from one school to the next. We guide students through every step: brainstorming, drafting, and refining each piece until it reflects both their voice and their intent. Together, we make sure every essay plays a distinct and strategic role in the larger application story.

  • College applications are full of small details that can have an outsized impact. A missed connection here or an unchecked box there can unintentionally send the wrong signal, like implying a student will apply for financial aid when they won’t, or not taking advantage of the “Future Plans” prompt. We help students navigate every part of the application, ensuring the non-essay sections are just as thoughtful and strategic as the rest.

  • While traditional alumni interviews are mostly limited to the most selective schools, many colleges now offer video responses or Glimpse videos to get a better feel for a student’s personality and voice. Regardless of the format, we help students prepare to stand out — presenting themselves with confidence, clarity, and a strong sense of what makes them unique.

  • Admissions decisions aren’t made by magic — they’re made by real people, sitting around a table, weighing the many pieces of each applicant’s story. Our counselors have been in that room at a wide range of colleges and know exactly what tips the scale. With the Principia Team Review, your child’s full application is reviewed — not once, but multiple times — by a mock admissions committee made up of our expert counselors. It’s a rare behind-the-scenes experience that offers insight no ordinary review can.

Our Students’ Impact Projects

  • Pawsitively Natural

Meet Pawsitively Natural — a student-led initiative giving day-old Subway bread a second life as shelf-stable dog treats. It’s a win-win: tackling corporate food waste and turning scraps into something sustainable.

  • Give a Kid a Book

Sixty-one percent of low-income families have no children’s books at home. Give a Kid a Book is rewriting that story, donating over 8,000 books to organizations across D.C., Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince George’s counties.

  • Art for Recovery

Addiction is a public health crisis — and one we don’t talk about nearly enough. Art for Recovery invites high school students across Northern Virginia to submit original artwork that brings visibility, empathy, and humanity to those facing substance use challenges.

  • Space Summit DC

Opportunities to explore astrophysics are limited in high school. As the first student-led astrophysics conference in the country, Space Summit DC features speakers from NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center, UMD, and more — offering teens a launchpad to the stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do parents typically begin college consulting?

We’ve worked with students starting as early as 6th grade and as late as 12th. While it’s never too late to make meaningful progress, starting earlier allows us to be more intentional — shaping academic choices, extracurriculars, and summer opportunities in a way that builds a compelling and authentic narrative over time.

How many students does each counselor work with each year?

At Principia, each of our counselors works with no more than 10 students annually. That’s by design — we believe meaningful guidance requires time, focus, and a deep understanding of each student’s unique story.

Do you offer consulting for students outside the DC Metro area?

Yes, absolutely. While we're based in the DC Metro area, we work with students across the U.S. and internationally — from California to Hong Kong to Seoul — and mst sessions are held virtually via Google Meet.

What if I only want to work with Oliver?

Oliver, our Director of College Consulting, works closely with a select number of students each year. If you're interested in working with him, you can schedule an initial consultation here. Please note: Founders only take on students who plan to continue through a 12th Grade Standard or Comprehensive Package (e.g., the Four-Year Package for students starting in 9th grade).

I’m interested in a Four-Year Package for my 9th grader. Do you offer multi-year packages?

Yes, we offer both annual and multi-year consulting packages, some of which include test prep and tutoring options. Every student is different, so the best way to move forward is to get in touch at info@principiatutors.com for a free consultation.

So, am I guaranteed a spot at Stanford?

We don’t make guarantees about specific schools; what’s more, if any counselor says they can guarantee admission, it should be a clear red flag. What we can guarantee is that we’ll maximize your student’s chances of admission to their top choice schools in an ethical manner that gives them agency and focuses on growth throughout the process.
